Over the next while, I’ll be publishing pieces of my book – Let it Flow – on this blog. If you like what you read, please consider purchasing the full book. The details are at the end of this post.
The dawning of a new day.
Suburbs lay quiet,
resting under the blanket of morning clouds,
only the treetops and buildings remain visible.
Early flights begin slowly:
Birds alone; birds in flocks.
People in flocks,
gathered in the single, man-made vehicle of flight.
while the geese –
University residents they are –
unmistakable by their crude callings.
and taxis begin their day.
The hum of humanity
returns to prominence.
The world turns,
busy-ness soon to return.
Yet for all the activity of mankind,
nature remains – as it has always been –
constant, and peaceful.
On the horizon,
from behind the silhouette of mountains,
the big orange ball of fire peeks out:
growing bigger – more visible –
with each passing second.
Warmth and light,
at first in its infancy,
but within the hour,
elevated above the clouds,
growing stronger and more radiant.
May this day be the beginning:
The beginning of a new chapter.
The leaving behind of much
that has shackled you to stagnation.
The departure from futile occupations.
With this rising,
may you rise above
the murky waters of your past.
May you be elevated beyond who you are,
to who you are becoming.
May the Light of this day – this start,
be accompanied by Truth, Courage, Wisdom, and Opportunity.
For this day has come with all those things,
and all you have to do is look deep within,
and recognise the capabilities
planted within your very being.
On this day,
may the Peace and Blessings of the Almighty be with you,
stay with you,
and shine through you.
The day has begun.
Date written: June 2007
From outside my front door, I was fortunate to have an elevated view of sunrise over Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs. It was both serene and awe-inspiring, watching from a place of solitude – witnessing, first, the perfect peace of nature’s morning routine, followed by the human population arising from its slumber, then settling into normality of everyday life.
This daily renewal marked a new life – which was an important thread of hope for me. At the time, I was in an emotionally-difficult place. But the sunrise reminded me that no matter what we go through, there’s always a new day. A fresh start. A chance to rise above the darkness that weighs us down, and rediscover the qualities implanted within us to make the coming day better.
The signs of the Almighty are always with us. But – because we’re so occupied with the hustle and bustle of life and responsibilities – we often fail to stop and fully take them in. It takes rare, beautiful experiences – like an amazing sunrise – to stop us in our tracks and open our spiritual eyes to truths and lessons that have been there all along…lessons that pass us by as we live in our robotic states of busy-ness.
